    SM 4 as it's DX10 hardware.

The DirectX 10.1 will come with the SM 4.1, but it works both on the 8000 and 2000 HD series.

I doubt it- DX 10.1 seems to include as obligatory some features that were optional with DX 10 and some minor improvements. ATI HD cards include some of DX 10.1 features as it seams nVidia was the one unable to implement quite a few of them (remember memory virtualization?)
All above are speculations though- I’m not a programmer nor an hardware engineer

From what I know, in a phone interview with a Microsoft official (I can't remember the site), he said that all the current DX10 cards will support the DX10.1.

Yeah, I hope you are right- it's not as obvious as it seems. It supports current hardware but does the hardware fully support all those new functions?

No, existing hardware won't support the upcoming features in 10.1. it will still support all the rest of 10.1 though (The bits that also exist in 10)

And no, DX10 is never going to support SM5.0.
It is possible that DX10.5 or something would do it, but DX11 would be far more likely.

From DX10 onwards, Microsoft are going to make more frequent updates to DirectX than they did with DX9 (which spanned from SM2.0, through 2.0a, 2.0b and all the other variations, up to SM3.0, over a period of 6 years)

Expect Microsoft to simply release a new version of DirectX when a new feature shows up, rather than try to patch it onto the existing version.

Actually, I read articles on Slashdot and Anandtech that said that no current DirectX 10 card Either AMD or nVidia) would fully support DirectX 10.1, citing interviews with MS employees. So who knows.

And an 8700M GT (or any other DX10 card) will only have SM4 support on Windows Vista.
