For me I'd say Far Cry 3 left a lasting impression, the campaign is one that I'd never forget as Vaas has to be one of the best villains in Far Cry history :D

Others I'd consider are Crysis 3, COD Modern Warfare 1, 2 & Black Ops, Metro Last Light.

If we're talking about shooters, then in would have to list a couple of favourites:
#1 Deus Ex:HR (and the original)
    #2 Killzone 2 and 3
#3 Crysis & Crysis: Warhead (the later Crysis titles failed to grip me)
    #4 CoD:MW
    #5 UT3
    #6 Half-life series

Honourable mention for The Last of Us, although haven't finished it.

I remember playing Deus Ex Human Revolution and just sitting at the main menu screen for 30 minutes haha, that menu soundtrack was too damn good. Miss those days :)

Sometimes you can just tell a masterpiece by the mere trailer (or just the music!). Here are 2 that spring to mind:

They really don’t make them like they used to, Killzone 3’s trailer alone is better than half the games cutscenes out there right now lol

Couldn't agree more. Can't go wrong with Malcolm McDowell as a vilain and a Two Steps from Hell soundtrack! (but it's obviously more than that - the Dutch did a great job)

Ha ha. Here comes my age. Police Quest series. Original Doom, Nukem, and wolfenstien. The original half life was a freakin amazing game when it came out first. New games are not near as fun as the old stuff. SK8 or Die...another classic awesomeness.

:) The original Doom was a technological breakthrough, but was the actual campaign that memorable beyond the first couple of levels?

Sierra's point and click adventure games are a timeless classic, but not sure we can talk about a campaign mode there :)

If we are branching out to other genres featuring campaign mode then I've got to add StarCraft.

The problem with new games is that innovation beyond ever more detailed graphics becomes incresingly more difficult, or perhaps too much budget gets pumped into graphics?

Loved DXHR, have not replayed it in years may give that a go next. I like Dying Light, TW3, Yakuza series, dishonored series etc I don't know that I have an ultimate favorite, too many games over the years and my favorite is usually the one I just enjoyed playing so for that it would be TW3.

Pure RPGs are another story. I would go with Fallout 1--2, (and maybe 3) plus Mass Effect. Honourable mention for Dungeon Master :)
