what is ISB utility in startup? there is no description for it. shall I remove it via msconfig?

also what about these processes, and how to disable them if they are not needed:
    igfxext.exe
    igfxsrvc.exe
    s24evmon.exe
    regsrv.exe
    vcsw.exe

Yep, part of nasty battery brand enforcement from what I've read...

On my machine C:\Program Files\Sony\ISB Utility\ISBMgr.exe (its language resource file to be precise) contains the following UI text:

Click OK to enter Hibernate mode, and remove and reinsert the battery. See the electronic VAIO(R) User Guide for more information about using the battery. The installed battery may not be properly connected to the computer or may not be compatible with the computer.

Actually you could replace this text with something more honest:
... please buy an original overpriced Sony battery because we really need your extra money ... :D

even if you remove it you can't use a non sony battery as sony has put a hardware block on them. perhaps on the motherboard. the isb utility is just at the program level

Have you tried looking in services? (Type services.msc in Run or in the Start window search box to locate it.)

EDIT: Never mind...didn't realize someone bumped a 5 month old thread! You've probably found it by now I'm guessing. ;)

    Could be a faulty battery.
After my battery failed on the SZ - ISB utility would show up when booting on an AC supply...

(Although then the problem should also occur in Vista...)

Sorry for my late answer. Happy new year !
I have canceled my downgrade right now ecause I'm waiting for a more effective xp version. As far as I remember, I guess the problem comes from a driver which manage power supply. That driver launch the ISB.exe and if I stop this process before the error message,, il it never appear.

    BYE.
