I have a number of Dell Precisions and other Dell computers that I’ve ordered over the years, almost all from the Dell Outlet. Last year I purchased a Dell 7740 from the Dell Outlet and like it so much that I wanted to purchase a “spare/upgrade” computer with similar or slightly better specs. I tried the Dell Outlet and even Ebay but the configuration I wanted just didn’t materialize. So I decided to purchase, for the first time, from the Dell website, a brand-new Precision 7750. This was under a recent Dell promotion which provided an additional year of ProSupport (plus what appeared to be a competitive price, and a $250 coupon code). I ordered on 25 June and was somewhat shocked to see the estimated delivery date pushed out to 20 August. Given that the 7760 is the “new model,” and that this was under a promotion, I didn’t expect the delivery date to be almost two months away. I checked the Dell Community Customer Care thread and was a bit appalled at the number of subthreads regarding delayed builds and shipping. Worse yet, the Customer Care thread appears to be getting hit regularly with “spam attacks” posting purported “support numbers” which simply serve to clutter up the thread…and make the webmasters do additional work.

Anyone know what is driving these “taking forever” builds/shipping? My understanding is that ALL Dell laptops are now manufactured to specification in China, which is likely exacerbating any problems.

There is a very large chip shortage because of COVID. This isn't just CPUs/GPUs but also smaller semiconductors. Take a look at used car prices, they are through the roof because they can't make enough new cars with these shortages. This is probably the reason...

From my casual observation it appears to be related to specific display panels. Alienware laptops with the LG? QHD panels are delivering in October whereas the FHD units are shipping immediately right now just for a frame of reference. As mentioned previously the chip shortage isn't helping either.

This is the reason. Chip shortages are affecting everything right now.

Thanks for the replies. I'd heard about the chip shortages but the UHD/4K panel issues I hadn't heard of. Of course, the build I chose included a 4K panel (once you have one, you'll never want to go back! :D) I guess I thought that since what I ordered was a "special deal" with "last year's model" that the part shortages wouldn't come into play. Based on what I'm reading on Dell Community, I think the problem people (including me) are having is the lack of information/transparency from Dell. Just take a few minutes to tell me that the problem is, say, my UHD panel and give me a realistic estimated arrival date for the part.

I'll try to be patient but it ain't easy! It's a good thing I don't "need" the laptop immediately.

Oh, and BTW, the replies here actually make me feel better about Dell - they should give you guys commissions!

Dell is pretty slow to begin with, add supply problems across multiple subvendors and minor detail of a tornado destroying their shipping hub in Nashville getting things done in a timely fashion falls by the wayside

Nah, I just talk about what I like and how the devices and company performs for me. I have had zero issue with dell, their service, product etc since I started using them 5 or so years ago. Acer was great to me before that. I have had cheap acer laptops fall down a flight of hardwood stairs and sustain zero injuries other than a key popping off the keyboard. If it were a mac or some other high buck system, it would have been destroyed.
Asus is pure sewage to me. There are many threads here with what they did to me so I won't bore with the details. But let's just say that I would NEVER go near an asus product with a 100 ft pole.
