Contrary to popular believe some Californians have, being cold outside doesn't necessary mean it's cold inside. Central heating, yo! I'm not too good with wines, had a bottle around, thought I open up and try it. And this was a dry Riesling, so it wasn't too light. For a hot summer evening outside I would go for a different one. I had a bottle of some Portuguese wine which would be perfect. Don't remember its name or brand, but it had a very nice taste similar the one you described and had a bit of sparkle. I imagine it would be very pleasant to drink under such circumstances. Hard stuff is benched because I got bored of it.
