Were S10 Ideapads shipped configured solely for 3G, making it impossible to switch to Wi-Fi?

I think my S10 (ideapad, Type 4333, Model 433322U) originally came with a 3G card installed (F3507g). The SIM is long gone and I don't want to use the 3G card.

I replaced the 3G card with an appropriate 43Y6489 WiFi card but despite pressing the Wireless Device button the blue wireless status LED will not light up, and the WiFi applet says no APs found. I can swap back to the 3G card, press the Wireless Device button, and the blue wireless status LED lights up, which suggests the card slot is working.

This makes me wonder if this particular model was designed solely for 3G and does not support switching to WiFi.
