Yeah, SotTR is looiking quite good, around 2060 level on the M1X, which is impressive given that the game runs under an x86/DirectX emulator!
Sleeping Dogs are really weird. How on Earth can a native port run slower?

This is surprising. A more repairable battery, and the USB-C + MagSafe ports are modular. It's annoying that the logic board has to come out to clean the fans, though.

Unless they were really old games, Mac ports of AAA titles have historically never run as well as their Windows counterparts even on identical hardware (which was easy to compare since you could use BootCamp). I'm guessing Sleeping Dogs was a hasty cash-in just to get the game operational on macOS. Any optimization probably would have taken more time and money than would have otherwise been reasonable because Feral Interactive, the porting firm, usually does an excellent job.

Yeah, looks like the original DX code was optimised, and they messed up the port implementation using a native API.

Anyway, it's quite impressive how efficient this emulation layer is, both in terms of handling CPU and GPU/DX code.

So far as I can tell the new Apple Silicon GPU has no hardware acceleration support for OpenGL/OpenCL in its drivers, so any of the Intel titles using that for rendering will fall back to software acceleration. If the port uses Metal API's, even the original 2014 version, it should be able to use hardware acceleration. What you have with Crossover is likely DirectX being translated to Metal for hardware acceleration support.

According to this, the original M1 supports OpenGL via Metal. There are similar online references regarding OpenCL-Metal driver for the original M1. It'd be rather odd for Apple to effectively drop support for those APIs by not providing any hardware acceleration.

Yeah you are right it definitely is hardware accelerating OpenGL. I ran Unigine Heaven and it is using hardware acceleration which worked fine other than 8xAA caused a black screen when rendering, but 4xAA was fine.

Almost done with the video, probably release tomorrow night.

Overall I think Apple has a winner.

What score did you get in Heaven on Extreme preset? Kind of hard to find this online.
