Oh, I wasn't saying established brands don't suffer from battery cell shortages too. Tesla has done more in the way of being able to supply their own production lines than others. Credit where credit's due. The reliability aspect I was talking about is how people can expect their vehicles to arrive properly assembled and without major paintjob defects, as well as being able to promptly take their vehicles in to be serviced throughout its lifespan. No one is betting on Volkswagen not being around years from now.

To be clear, I'm not expecting Tesla to simply disappear either. They'll either seek new investment or get bought out, but not all potential EV customers see it that way.

Lots of pissed off VW owners, I was almost one - taken in by Audi / VW TDI, and now after $B's in fines, a new VW funded (as part of the settlement) charging infrastructure in the US, and more $B's to convert from diesel to Electric, shall we forgive them and buy their EV cars?

I'm still not sure myself, but that is what VW is asking for, forgiveness and to move on:

As dreadful as dieselgate was/is, everyone was in on it. Volkswagen was the tip of the iceberg that happened to make the headlines. Porsche Automobil Holding SE is the major shareholder in Volkswagen AG, and Porsche was recently fined $599 million for their involvement. Audi was fined $1.3 billion, and you can bet on executives across brands knowing about it... and not just under the Volkswagen umbrella either. VW, Daimler (incl. Mercedes), BMW, Nissan, Mitsubishi, General Motors, Fiat Chrysler (incl. Jeep), Renault, and Peugot, among others, were all found to have cheated during emission tests. The list of innocent brands grows shorter as the conspiracy unravels. The irony is that Volkswagen wasn't actually among the worst offenders, if Transport & Environment is to be believed.

If the Volkswagen badge is still too much to bear, Opel/Vauxhall has a more affordable EV than the I.D. 3 for next year, named Corsa-e.

It won't be as technologically impressive as more expensive cars, with a 50 kWh battery, but it comes with a decent amount of equipment for something that's priced against the Renault Zoe.

Apparently the Tesla killer cars from the big automakers aren't selling. the Jaguar iPace has as many sitting on the lot as sold in the last year, Audi eTron isn't selling so they came out with an eTron "lite", which has a much smaller battery, 100hp less in power, and selling for almost the same price - eTron "lite" also charges slower, even slower than the actual charging time for the original eTron - and didn't all of these come out in the last 6 months, or less?

Within the Diesel Gate I software fix to VW group vehile's diesel emissions cheat apparently has what appears to be a new Diesel Gate II emissions spewing cheat "hidden hack" that turns off the emissions cleaning system, and the court didn't double check to make sure VW group vehicles weren't cheating again, until now.

Not Again! VW Caught Cheating With Its Diesel Emissions “Fix”

"Not again! Volkswagen, what are you doing? Stop it already!

Just when you thought Volkswagen’s “Dieselgate” emissions debacle was behind it, a German court today revealed that VW’s “fix” for the diesel cheating devices contains another cheat device. We can’t make this up.

In a court hearing in Dusseldorf, Germany, the district court there has revealed that the software fix for the VWs affected by the original diesel emissions cheat only controlled the exhaust gas cleaning system in temperatures between 10-32 degrees Celsius, or 50-85 degrees Fahrenheit. When temperatures fall above or below this span, the system is disabled resulting in over-polluting emissions."

Interestingly, after hearing this news, the South Korean government has basically told VAG (VW AG: The VW Group of Companies) that they can stick their diesels with a complete ban on them coming into the country and potentially cancelling their import certifications.
“They were manipulated so that the emission mitigation devices perform at lower levels in driving conditions that are different from those when they were certificated,” said an official from the South Korean Ministry of Environment. The vehicles were comprised of 1,261 cars across eight models that were sold in South Korea from May 2015 to January 2018 under the Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche brands. These include the Volkswagen Touareg V6 3.0 TDI BMT, Volkswagen Touareg 3.0 TDI 4 Motion, the Audi A6 40 TDI Quattro, two Audi A6 50 TDI Quattro models, two Audi A7 50 TDI Quattro models, and the Porsche Cayenne diesel. The South Korean government is looking at penalties of nearly US $10 million so far and will be launching further investigations into the VAG brands.
Lots of great comments from German readers as well for that video...

I was wondering why VW would feel the need to cheat again - within the fix for the first cheat - as that seems a bit overly pathological even for a car manufacturer, but it turns out there is a "good reason" - Euro Level 6 Emissions requirements from over a year ago which many cars failed and without the ability to pass those brand new cars couldn't be sold in Europe. Here's coverage on that subject from a year ago:

Hi Zac and Jesse, thx for another great episode! I'm from Germany and I'm very sad about what has happened in my country.
I worked for one of these companies about 10 ago and told them back then, that it's very important to start EVs now, that it's the better concept and that sooner or later they have to switch to sustainable energy anyways... they were just like: "Oh yes, we're already doing this... in a few years the best EVs are the German ones.... bla bla bla" Look what we are in now... how could they be so stupid to think that they would get away with this... I very glad that finally all of their betrayals come out and hope the ones who caused this will be put in jail even if this means that Germanys economy will suffer from that... besides cars we have some other great engineering in machines, automation aso... hope we will not collapse.

"Strom-Garage and these companies were warned and advised, since years, e.g. by Prof. Dr. Gunter Dueck. I hope you're right and we will not collapse"

Lots more great comments in that video posting...

As with millions of people I almost became a victim of VW groups lies and deceptions - pushing highly polluting diesel as "clean", cheap - better mileage - vehicles with great prices / discounts. Thankfully I wasn't pulled in to an actual purchase, but it was very close.

Why after all of this would I consider VW group electric vehicles? What lies are they using to hide what evils this time? Given their complete lack of controls over their lies and deceptions, even after $XXX Billions of losses and fines because of Diesel lies and deceptions - now many times over, how can I trust VW ever again, again?

Cadmium installed - Volkswagen threatened recall of 124,000 electric cars
Because of a charger that contains traces of cadmium, Volkswagen could recall 124,000 electric cars. A supplier had not indicated that the toxic heavy metal was installed.
    Tuesday, 31.07.2018 18:56
    https://www.spiegel.de/wirtschaft/s...oautos-wegen-verbautem-cadmium-a-1221089.html

"Volkswagen threatens the recall of numerous electric cars due to exposure to the toxic heavy metal cadmium. The group announced that a recall by the Kraftfahrtbundesamt (KBA) was "currently in clarification". According to this, up to 124,000 electric cars are affected. In them, a charger is installed, which contains cadmium to a small extent. The material data submitted by the supplier did not contain information on cadmium use.

The use of cadmium is strictly regulated, it can cause cancer . Because Volkswagen found cadmium traces in the chargers, the group had informed the KBA in mid-July. Thus, only 0.008 grams of cadmium were detected per charger. The chargers were installed between 2013 and June 2018 in battery-electric cars and inhybrid vehicles of the Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche brands.

Volkswagen stopped then according to own data the production and delivery of the concerned vehicles. The charger was replaced by that of another supplier and production resumed.

The cadmium-containing relay is installed in a solid housing inside the charger, which in turn is surrounded by a solid housing. That way, Volkswagen can ensure that no consumer or technician comes in contact with the heavy metal and that the cadmium does not get into the environment. Nevertheless, the cars are potentially not in conformity with European legislation on end-of-life vehicles. It regulates the later disposal of the vehicles."
