I'm running Vista right now, and after upgrading my RAM and HDD the difference in performance is huge. Since my Radeon 9100 IGP doesn't have Pixel Shader 2.0, Vista isn't running Aero, something that doesn't really matter to me.

The problem lies in the display. I have a 19-inch monitor hooked up to my 15.4 inch laptop, but niether show sharp XP graphics. ClearType is on, but graphics are still fuzzy as it is using the Standard VGA Graphics adapter. I tried getting Vista to search for drivers for me but it said it had made the "best choice" for me. The monitor runs at 1280x1024 but Vista is running it on 1024x768, a resolution displayed for my laptop. How do I get the display running so that graphics are the same as in XP?

UPDATE: I need a driver for Vista; any suggestions beside Omega? It seems stupid that there are no Vista drivers for "old" video cards.

I used ATI's catalyst driver for Vista for the Mobility Radeon 9500 (or 9600, whichever earlier chip they offer) and installed it. Just go to ATI's website, find Drivers and Downloads in the menu, and select Windows Vista x86. It works fine for me, but for some reason Vista is locking the Radeon's frame buffer, limiting it to 64MB of RAM instad of the 128MB I get in XP.

I also tried the Omega drivers (only 3.8.252/2.8.525 or earlier, can't remember which), but the installation spat an error at me.

thnx for sharing the details - i believe that vista has quite a way to go yet in incorporating the video driver in the database, i just updated my ati vista driver from ati direct even though vista has a new version. just like u experienced, trying to update with ms vista, it spucks out like no tomorrow. direct was no problem

    cheers ...

For those that have nVidia cards then you should be happy to know that Vista has WDDM generic drivers for nVidia chipset cards. I don't know why they do not have one for ATI cards. But yea. That would of been the correct resolution for the issue there.

P.S. - Did Aero start working for you after you installed the drivers?

My Radeon doesn't have pixel shader 2.0, a requirement for Aero; I wouldn't want the interface anyways. I experimented with it in a tech shop once and wasn't at all impressed. Why would I sacrifice speed and stability for glowing buttons and pointless 3D flipping?

I got your message, vlad. Yeah, thats the driver I used but I didn't have any stretching or anything. This happened even after you adjusted the resolution? I think we're in two separate boats here.
