Trying to get rid of these questionably useful programs -- but I don't see entries for them in add/remove programs in the control panel (or for any of the other useless VAIO software packages that come on OEM machines sans "fresh start").

What am I missing? I would do a clean install, but I'm (a) running TrueCrypt to encrypt this disk for the next 8 hours, and (b) don't have much motivation to do the drivers/utilities dance.

a clean OS install is what I would recommend. Even if you choose to uninstall these programs, they can still leave these bits and pieces inside your registry.

it may not effect anything performance wise but i just can't sleep well without going through a clean install instead.

    Try Revo Uninstller

Its free, highly recommended and will get all the garbage out. I may do this on those two tools as well however if you don't see entries for them in add/remove programs in the control panel.... ???? fresh install, fresh OS..

I'm on XP now but I remember getting rid of these when I had Vista. It's possible that these were installed as part of a "package" (wrapper installation) and thus don't have visible entries in "Add/Remove Programs." You can lookup in Registry (under local machine hive in Software\Microsoft\Windows\.....\Uninstall), there may be hidden entries having UninstallString key. Running that from command line will uninstall a piece. Another approach is to find directory where this software is located and look for uninstall.exe or something similar. Run it. If it complains, you might have to give it a parameter - name of the .log file in the same directory. These are the tricks I typically use.

Otherwise, clean OS install is your friend.

First of all try the System Configuration Utility that's install on Windows first. Some Sony stuff is there. Now what I did for the VAIO Care is I found where the program is which is under C:\Program Files\Sony\VAIO Care. I tried deleting the .exe file but Sony and Microsoft will not let you, but it lets you move that files to anywhere on your computer. Once you have done that restart your computer and VAIO Care shouldn't start. After you have moved the files and restarted your computer for some reason it lets you delete the files now so that's what did. This probably isn't the best way, but it's the only way i could figure out.
