I have a Vaio Z36GD (Asian version of the Z69). I recently cleaned the hard drive and reinstalled the OS from the recovery CD's I created when I originally purchased the machine.

I have run all the updates for Windows, BIOS, etc. Running VISTA Business 64 bit SP2.

For the most part, the machine is performing well.

However, the Vaio Smart Network utility seems to slow down the start-up process (it is always the last thing to become available...with a pause and the cursor clocking for about 10 seconds before it is complete). I don't have much else running at start-up (NIS 2010 and other standard utilities...pointer, etc.).

Anyway, can I remove or disable the Vaio Smart Network utility and still effective use and manage Wifi, Bluetooth, and LAN connections? Has anyone else noticed this performance issue and addressed it?

Any thoughts are welcomed and appreciated!
    Thanks!

You don't NEED it, no - Windows can manage Wifi, LAN and bluetooth on its own without the program. What it does is allow you to have seperate profiles for different networks/wifi access points. So if you use different access points and want to be able to quickly switch settings between them, it's handy. Otherwise, it's unnecessary.

Well you can disable lanutil.exe from starting up in misconfig/system configuration. I have done this. When you need it just access it through the Vaio control centre. It can be handy if you want to easily disable and enable any of these network options. I need it to enable/disable my wwan but you don't appear to have this so it is less useful for you.

I have no idea about WWAN as I don't have it, but bluetooth, yes

Windows mobility center has an option to turn OFF Wifi.

Where? How? I have never been able to find any way for Vista or Win7 to turn off bluetooth, except by disabling the device in device manager. (But even then the pesky blue light stays on.)

Guys, I have a Sony VGN-Z36GD and my hd stopped working. Unfortunately I have lost the recovery dics I created. Could you please post your discs in ISO or other image format that I can download and burn them? Or even could you please make a copy of them and send it to me? I will certainly pay for them (maybe using Paypal?). Thank you guys! Hope somebody can help me...

No one can. Those disks are copyright protected and even asking about this is not allowed on these forums according to forum rules. You will have to buy replacements from Sony.

Thanks, Gary. I have already contacted Sony Asia but none had replied me. I want to buy recovery discs but Sony Support did not contact me. I asked them again yesterday. Hope they can help me. Sorry for asking for the discs in forum. I did not know it was not allowed.
