Is it possible to update to High Sierra without having to do a clean install? The update option for Sierra isn't coming up any longer so I don't think I'll be able to use that as an intermediate step. Thanks in advance.

I would strongly recommend updating from scratch, Sierra really loves to east ressources and get worse and worse over time, at least It ate the performance away from my macbook over time.

I can't see why not? You it can be downloaded and installed through AppStore. I did it on mine, works fine. Apps in linux runs in sandboxes, so if you are having a problem now, you will likely see it in next OS as well. So essentially the upgrade should be fine.
