Safe mode does nothing... what should i be doing there anyway?[

QUOTE=JOSEA;9069764]If there is nothing in local settings do you have a recent restore point you can go back to?[/QUOTE]

no... i disable that right after i first installed the OS... long time ago...

    no...

is there a way to just do a fresh one?

iirc there is a repair tool somewhere... i think it might have been under the windows install disc or something... can't remember what its called.. will that work?

i guess what i need to do currently is to rebuild the registry. anyway to do that?

Gimme a bit and I will break out my backup laptop and go to that registry key and copy the registry entry that controls it (provided I can locate it). If I can find it I will export it and PM it over to you. Other than that, the only option is to do a clean install.

EDIT: Power configuration settings are in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\PowerCfg\GlobalPowerPolicy
Check the Policies entry. The 4th to last number on the bottom hex value should read 15, try changing it to 14. This is what changes in my power policy when I uncheck the "show power icon in taskbar". Restart and see if it works.
