Hi I was wondering if there is a way to turn the laptop screen off without using sleep or hibernation or plugging a monitor, i.e. I want to leave the laptop on working/downloading etc but with the screen off, since using sleep/hibernate would simply suspend these tasks. I'm using Presario C500 (think it's discontinued by now) but if anyone has any idea or if there is a common method because I don't have a spare monitor .... thanks!

Just go to power settings and adjust it to automatically turn the screen off after 1 minute.

I click on an icon in the quick launch bar and get instant screen off which wakes back up on mouse movement. Here's how:

    1. open Notepad, type "nircmd monitor low", then save file as "blank.cmd"
    2. download (freeware) nircmd from http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/nircmd.html
    3. unzip nircmd into a folder, put blank.cmd in same folder, and put
shortcut to blank.cmd on the desktop or quick launch bar. Done.

nircmd does many other neat tricks directly and simply - the help file reveals all.

You can also go to the control panel and set it so that it does not go into sleep mode when you close the screen. The computer will continue its processes and applications but with the screen closed and off. When you open it again it will turn right back on. Let me know if you need help activating this feature.

Hello, I just got a dell e1505, and I am looking for similar functionality. I have tried nircmd and lomsel shutdown. On my old laptop, putting the lid down caused some weird problems, and nircmd always worked. When either nircmd or lomsel shutdown try to do the monitor turn off comand from the cli, it dosn't work, if I run the lomsel shutdown gui, i can turn off the monitor. I would actually like to simply close the lid on my monitor, but for some reason, when vista is running- it will not turn off the power to monitor when the lid is down. When i was in the bios and closed the lid, the screen went off and came back up when i opened it. However, if I set the power option to do nothing, than close the lid, the screen stays on until the timeout, which is undesireable. Any suggestions?

Hello, I have solved my problem through the following advice from dell:

To resolve this problem in the Microsoft® Windows Vista? operating system, run the powercfg -h on command at a
command prompt to enable the hibernate feature and the hybrid sleep feature:

1.Click the Start button, click All Programs, and then click Accessories.
2.Right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
3.Type powercfg -h on, and then press the <Enter> key.

The hibernate feature is now enabled in Microsoft Windows Vista.

Apparently, without hibernate on, the lid does not know to disable, I don't quite understand.
