I have a Vaio SZ-470N which as been downgraded from Vista to XP. During the downgrade process the HDD was completely reformatted, blowing away the recovery partition. When the device is powered on, I get a bios msgs saying:

    TCG error: TPM Initialization Failed
    Press < F1 > to continue

I assume this is to do with crypto keys which must have been destroyed during the downgrade. I've tried to turn off the TCG/TPM in the Bios but the settings don't seem to 'save'.

Is there a way to recover/recreate the keys or remove this message?

I'd also be interested in returning to the factory installed Vista. Where can I get a recovery cd?

Any help, advice or suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

For once you could switch off the TPM module in the BIOS.

    Then:
Reformatting the drive should not cause a TPM error per se, other people have sucessfully downgraded their laptop - and you need to reformat to instal XP, so...

If you did not made the recovery cd's, then you have to order them from Sony.

I have tried to turn off the TPM module in the Bios but when I 'save and exit' it does not seem to save the change.

    That is strange.
Maybe you should contact Sony about the issue?

I'm guessing this could be a security feature to prevent people stealing the laptop and then just reformatting it, perhaps? I would contact Sony in the first instance, yes.

Next time, disable any bios security or hard disk passwords before you reformat, I reckon...

You can definitely format it using the recovery discs you made yourself.
(I used them with TPM on)
But maybe they are prepared for that...
