I have a Toughbook CF-52HCMDZAM with intermittent backlights. They flicker as you type or tap the desk. They go on and off as you adjust the angle of the screen.
Once on, they will stay on until the screen is touched or adjusted, or the desk is knocked.

It seems like a poor cable connection, but I read that the inverters also go bad sometimes. Where is this likely to be, and do I need to strip down the base or the screen half to start troubleshooting?

I'm going to say a bad cable or a bad lcd control board. Probably the cable. Pull the speaker cover off and take a look at the cable near the hinge.

Thanks, I don't have a service manual. Is the board in the screen half or the base half of the laptop? ie, which half do I need to dismantle?

Just pull the cover above the keyboard, you will see the cable. It usually gets worn thru on the hinge. The lcd board is part of the lcd.
