    At the config on the brink of thermal shutdown I got 100 C in 3 threads/cores. and 97 C or 98 C in 5 other threads/cores. The answer would be 2-3 C. :)

My W510 with i7-920XM connected to a Dell U2711 (27-inch) monitor had two thermal shutdowns yesterday; and it prompted me to inspect the reliability of my overclocked system. I did several rigorous tests from 6 pm to noon of the next day, conducting a lot of repeated Full System Stress Tests. Here are the findings:

    1. Overclocked configuration can survive at most 5 rounds of repeated, automated non-stop Full Stress Tests

    2. Non-overclocked configuration can survive 20 rounds of repeated, automated non-stop Full Stress Tests.

Turning off ThrottleStop does not reset the overclock setting. I needed to restart Windows to reset the configuration to its original settings.

    Summary:

If you are working on something serious and need full reliability of your machine, restart Windows and do not start ThrottleStop at all before starting your work.

Overclocking is fun and exciting, though!

    hi guys,

Im on the way to upgrade my w510 to 920xm or 940xm...
For what reason all of you bought the 920xm and not the 940xm one?
On ebay they sell the ES Versions vor 240 and 300 Euro.
I would buy the 940xm but Im not sure if it will be overclockable the same way as you overclocked the 920xm...

    greets

I am now using a 256GB Crucial M4 as primary and another 256GB Crucial C300 as secondary in the Ultrabay. Typical sequential read/write speed is around 200-230MB/s.

I just traded my W510 + 920xm in with a W520 + 2820qm. A 2920xm is still too expensive for me and I don't know whether an "ES" is reliable. Please share with me your experience with W520 as well.

@rionale, a 920xm is significantly less expensive than a 940xm. Both can be relatively equally overclocked.

I haven't used my W520 in few weeks. I am rather disappointed that it's not overclockable. The TRL AND TDP are locked. I geekbench around 11700..if you are wondering. Do you know anyone who can hack the Bios? I have a feeling that the W520 runs much hotter..and overclocking might be very limited..but I am willing to see how far we can push it..if we can get a unlocked bios.

No wonder why people are upset about the 2920xm on W520. My W520 + 2820qm geekbench around 11000! There is someone on the net whitelisting the BIOS. They should be able to do the same to unlock the o/c.

Did you buy the "ES" or the OEM version of 2920xm, by the way? The clock speed of the ES lower than the OEM one. But the price on eBay is significantly different too?
