Im going to create a compendium of thin and light (not necessarily thin btw), that are still gaming capable with Haswell (Intel 4th gen i core cpus) and if AMD Kaveri behaves well, its shall be here! This is the 2013 Update for this thread, so stay put and watch for the new models flooding in!

BTW the old models are here

    The Requirements to be here:

    Screen size: 11-14
Weight: less than 2kg or 4.4lbs preferably, I will put some systems that are higher, but only by 200g
GPU: it has to be mid range, it doesnt matter if its old tech or new, but if we can go to the high end (unlikely), why not?

    Notes:

In the end I like it, there are a couple of flaws on it, the display shouldve been IGZO 3200*1800 of goodness and high quality in terms of gamut and so forth, it should come with thunderbolt, so when I need more ports that I currently have with that paltry 3 USB 3.0, I can just hook it up to a dock and be done with it, I dont miss at all the lack of a card reader, nor ODD.

The current impressions from early hands on and distributed pre production machines for review are quite favorable, the touchpad is wunderbar, they say on par with apple, the KB is also good, and the heat is quite alright, currently no leaf blower comments or how it shall be 3 mile island or chernobyl again

Basically if they had those 2 things, I would buy it, without thoughts or regrets, I would just do it

For me despite this being the 2nd prototype for the 14'', I think this is still a trial run, I have high hopes for maxwell regarding gaming (we will see its silver hammer!) and with broadwell supposed DDR4, we could see more RAM on it, along with thunderbolt 2.0 and the ramp up in production of IGZO displays as well

if you are going to say overpriced, this machine is probably that, if it came with those 2 things that I wanted, I would say no, currently its a very large yes

Im not much of a fan of the build quality of the GE series, they are the successors of the EX series, which I do own, and its fallen to pieces, after 2 years of usage (when it was forcibly retired), aside all that it throttles

    Notes:

Very anxious for this one as well, Clevo/Sager are very renowned gaming notebook makers, though not known, this is their 2nd foray into the real mobile gaming machines, the first was the w110er, which was a very easy recommendation and very often mentioned here

47w quads? unreal! and 62wh battery? that should provide at least 4-5h of usage, and it does, however it throttles

I like it, just wish it couldve been lighter and pack thuderbolt, so I could dock this

    Notes:

I was pretty torn to put this one here, granted its got a lot of power, both cpu and gpu wise, however as all igpus, it shares a lot of inconsistencies and its highly dependable on high speed with low timing ram. And with the current review in anandtech, Im sure that the drivers need polishing and while intel has moved on that, a lot, they still dont deliver those drivers with enough speed

    Graphics Processing Unit (GPU)

Since the idea of this thread is to get the best possible combination of power and mobility, while this may vary for some, I set the standards in the first post

    Nvidia:

Nvidia released the kepler architecture last year (2012), with the introduction of the gtx 680, one great card, with the only problem that its impossible to find one to buy, due to production issues.
The mobility line was launched some days latter, and basically its a mess as usual, lets go first for the usual suspects:

    The Rebadge

Fermi was a good chip, so good that Nvidia thought that it might me a good thing to keep it running while it solves their production issues, thus we are met with it again.
It was launched for the mobile market in 2010 and for the mid range its basically the same chip that we saw 2 years ago.

    1.) GT 425m/430m/540m/550m/555m
    2.) GT 445m/555m

Criminal number 1 - 96 core and variations of DDR3 and GDDR5, with the amount of ROPs being different as well
Criminal number 2 - 144 core and DDR3, with the amount of ROP being different. Last year we saw a variant of the GT 555m only available in the LG P330, thats a somewhat new chip.

Those GPUs are the one we are calling GT 630m/635m/640m LE.

They have a performance loss compared to the 640m kepler variant, its around 20%, since even the 640m is close to the gtx 460m in performance, while the gt 555m never was.

    The Kepler

Kepler is the new architecture by Nvidia launched this year, its a 28nm tech, gorgeous and power sipping.

Nvidia launched the GT 640m/650m and the GTX 660m, while strange as it may be, all chips are the same, the difference are in the clocks and the vRAM used, being DDR3 or GDDR5.

They offer a substantial jump in performance compared to what was offered in the 2 years past. They are well worth a look.

    AMD

AMD released the Graphics Core Next (GCN) this year, with the 7970, its using the 28nm tech.

    The Rebadge

While we still have to have some more confirmation its clear that below and including the 7600m we are facing some rebadges in the field. They offer around the same performance as the nvidia rebadge. The ones we know are:

    7670m = 6730m
    7690m = 6770m

Basically AMD designs a mid range chip and applies different clocks and different vRAM, thus increasing performance. For example the 6730m has the same clocks as the 6770m, while being slower due to the DDR3 against the GDDR5 of its higher ranking brother.

    NEW PART

Basically they are going for 2 year cycles as we saw on fermi as well. This year there is no sight of Fermi (you may rest in peace), but so far the new GPUs are the gk106 models
    760m/765m and the 770m

    GCN

its a chip that has made great strides much like nvidia did, we are still missing benchmarks and gaming figures for the cards, however since they are based on the 7700 series the leap is good and the performance solid, while sipping power as well. So far we have:

    7730m/ 7750m

There is the 7850m however, I dont have any hope that it should come to be in the line up that we are looking forward

    NEW PART

Again as we see with Kepler, we see with AMD, they are transitioning for a 2 year architecture change as well.

New parts are the 8700m/8600m/8500m series, being composed of the same core, with variable core clocks and vRAM options and speed, with the main difference on the 8700m line with a wider bus (128bit)

I will add latter some performance figures, this is just so that you gals/guys know what to expect from these machines and to have some basic knowledge regarding what makes or breaks the thin and light gaming category

^^that link is a vault of info regarding the vaio S13

Notes: I'm sorely happy with Sony they went with the kepler variant of the 640m LE. And the happiness is justified, due to excelent overclocking that has been reported with kepler card, Petrov told me that he could achieve 950mhz in the core clock, a good departure from the 500mhz. Amal77 was the leader on this good enterprise

Apple Macbook Pro with Retina Display 13 (aka rmbp 13)

    Specifications - Released
    Screen: 13-inches 2560x1600 glossy

    Price: 1700
    Availability: available

Notes: You are wondering why this is here, it doesnt make sense! Its not with a dgpu! However through one thing that is called thunderbolt we can correct that greatly.

So the setup for this would be as follows, buy a rmbp 13 from frys (1500) + either the sonnet echo express SE or the mLogic mLink (400) + 7750 (99) = gaming capability of its larger brother + something something dark side (total cost of 2100). Off course if budget is no issue you can go for other thunderbolt powered egpu setups, like the magma express 3t (800, but you can fit a 680 in there easily) or sonnet echo express SE larger siblings. There is a DIY approach, its called the TH05.

This for me is the future, and Im actually waiting for haswell to come to the rmbp 13 to make a purchase, another great thing that they could add is for someone to come up with a sata cable, so that I can install whatever SSD that is 2.5'' in there. Also it wouldnt kill to have 16gb of ram and they could have used a Quad cpu in there, the cooling really can handle, less than 70c under load? This is something very new for apple.

Notes: This notebook comes with a 640m LE, this is a gpu that is rebrand, basically its the same gpu as the 425m/435m/445m/540m/550m/555m/630m/635m, yes its in use for almost 3 years now, the difference in power to a true kepler 640m is great, hovering around 20% or more. Until the gt 650m is in this machine I advise against buying it.

On a sidenote I would like to add, that I highly doubt that the asus n46vz will be avaible in certain countries like germany.. Unfortunately, the market in germany, isnt big enough for 14 inch notebooks, we never got the lenovo y470 or the asus n45 in the past :( Although I would very much like to have the asus n46
