However, I'm an even greater believer of the First Amendment, thus it becomes an ethical decision that individual believers must make based on their conscience.

If all ethical positions are equally moral, than no ethical positions are of any inherent moral value. Here, the context provided by Brown's statement is a most relevant one which effectively informs the activities of the participants as highlh questionable, at the very least.

He's using the word desecrate to describe these actions, and I agree different positions and actions are not equally moral. Myself, I stand toward the flag and remove a cap if I'm wearing one, but I do not put my hand over my heart nor sing. Common decency tells me it has a lot of meaning to many and a general respect is in order, but it's something that isn't mandated or required by law. I choose to see it as a time to be appreciative for all the good things this nation provides for me, and not the bad. I'd find the burning or spitting on the flag a higher degree of desecration. A couple decades ago people felt if you put a patch of the flag onto your bluejeans it was disrespectful. If they turned their backs toward the flag it would also be more egregious. If people wish to come to the conclusion these athletes hate America, they're entitled to an opinion. But they are protesting overt police violence toward the very citizens they work for, and in my mind this does not mean they hate America or disrespect it. They're kneeling, and if we can keep this in perspective this is not the travesty- it's the over aggressive policing in this nation of ours. Personally, I don't think it's the best choice of action since it means so very much to an awful lot of people (then people go down the line like you're disrespecting war veterans), but I don't consider it a heinous act either.
