    Was pretty cool I had a window seat (first time I've seen engine being "lit up" by an ASU), but unfortunately a small kid sat next to me. Lil' guy couldn't keep calm for the most of the flight. Also feel sorry for the lady who sat in front of him. Him slamming that tray table must have annoyed her a lot...

    Air starter unit. It's used when APU bleed is inop., therefore plane cannot start engines by itself, so ASU is used.

    Interesting. You got me reading this. So do they or don't they use ground power from the terminal to start their engines?

    They don't. Planes use electrical power from airports (although some small airports might not have that either, so then APU (it is a part of the plane) is used to provide electrical power). Airliners use APU to start engines, unless, like I've mentioned, APU bleed is inop., so then special equilment, ASU, is used.
