T410 not shutting down

Hi, it appears I have my first problem with my new T410. :\ Some times when I turn off the computer (from within windows of course), the screen shuts off, but the computer remains on. I can't turn it off, or on, it's totally unresponsive, the only way I can turn it off is to hold the power button for 5 seconds.
I just updated the BIOS to the latest version yesterday hoping it might resolve the problem, but then it happened again last night. I have wake on lan disabled (though no ethernet cable plugged in), and the auto timer off, as well as USB always-on.
This started happening when I installed the Intel SSD, I'm thinking of pulling it and putting in the HDD that it came with and see if that resolves it, though I don't know how it could cause that. The SSD also has the latest firmware.
Any ideas?
Also, I have two external ODD's installed. I noticed that sometimes the T410 gets "confused" and doesn't know which to boot from from within the boot menu. Some times it shows just one, or just the other. I may disconnect one and see if that makes any difference. Again I don't see how it could cause that, just the process of elimination right now.

 

This is usually a software problem with the OS, i usually deal with it by reinstalling the OS from scratch (not that i am saying this is what you should do), since i don't have any other way of resolving this sort problems.

 

Well, it goes through the shutdown procedure normally. The screen turns off, but it's like it doesn't shut down completely, the fan is still on, etc. It's like it went to sleep and it can't wake up.
I suppose it could be a software problem, but windows should be handing off to the computer when it shuts down. I see windows shuts down completely (atleast from what I can tell).
I may just reinstall XP again since I have the drivers, and go from there. I've been having some odd behavior from the SSD, I wonder if it has anything to do with that though.

 

yes, my Thinkpad does this too, it would only shutdown if i go through the hard shutdown procedure. There is also a case with my friend's ASUS which had similar problem, but hard shutdown doesn't do anything, which turned out to be faulty motherboard problem.

 

Do you have Bitlocker loaded? The symptoms are the same as the issue with that. If so, KB975496

 

No I don't, it's just Win7 Home Premium 64-bit. So no bitlocker.

It's interesting though, because that's exactly what my system is doing as described in that article.

That is exactly what happens, but I don't have bitlocker. Strange.

Edit: It would appear that bitlocker and TPM (trusted platform module) are connected. I know my T410 has a TPM. I wonder if maybe I just need a driver update for the TPM. I'm going to keep looking.

 

From your description that is what I thought.

977307 is the only other similar fix for W7, but it doesn't match the symptoms as well.

When I had that Bitlocker issue on my R61 I thought it was the BIOS at first, but it turned out to be a W7 bug...

I had the USB stop error and one of those fixed that. The others I added while tracking down my issues and with these it appears stable.

 

@Talin,
are you absolutely certain that your shutdown button doesn't send the system to hibernate or sleep? You can reassign the buttons through the advanced power settings if that's the case.

 

I always use Start -> Shutdown, and it's set to shut down, so it's definitely not that.

 

That's what I mean, sometimes shutdown is not a shutdown but a hibernate instead. I had this issue on a few systems that came from Dell with stock images and for some reason their shutdown buttons where reassigned to hibernate so I had to reassign the keys.
