Suggest me a car for ~8k

    How about Volvo, they make pretty solid vehicles. I know a few people with 20+ year old volvo's with that 5 cylinder Mercedes diesel in them

    Jeep's would be another good option. An older wrangler or CJ may fit the bill

    They get poor mileage, but if you change the fuel mapping on them you can get 24-26mpg out of them

    Honda, Mitsubishi, Mazda, Hyundai..better if he knows how to drive a manual trans.

    used 4 wheel drives comes with alot of baggage and requires maintenance...... best to avoid it. there are alot of choices for under 8 grand. quite frankly if its gonna be his first car i would go for something around 5 grand

    go with last Gen Civic 2001-2005 that will be more then enough.

    what do you think about 2006 vw passat? I can find good ones for ~9,2.0 litter engine with turbo.

    I am not a fan of VW's because of the maintenance.

    Just what I have seen with people who own them they are not that reliable and price of parts rivals Porsche. A friend has a TDI Jetta and he as alot of problems with electronics and engine parts, and he is not the only one I know of.

    If you have the money to maintain them then you can afford something better.

    they are expensive to repair, much more so than other imports, and are not exactly reliable.
