I have a Samsung MzVLB512HAJQ 512GB which came installed in my Lenovo Ideapad 720S-15IKB. I boot windows off this drive. This drive was installed in slot 1 of the motherboard.

Yesterday I purchased a Samsung 970 EV0 1tb drive, which I was going to add to slot 2 on the motherboard for extra storage. When I put this drive in slot 2, my laptop would not even power up. It was completely dead. I then swaped the drives, so that the 970 evo is in slot 1 on the motherboard and the Samsung MzVLB512HAJQ 512GB is in slot 2. The computer now boots perfectly and I can see both drives in the bios / windows. I am happy with this solution, but what I can't understand is why can't the 970 evo be used in slot 2 on the motherbaord? Why does it only work in slot 1, whereas the 512GB drive works in slot 1 and 2? Both drives are NVME drives. This is a puzzle for me - does anyone know why this might happen?
