i just pulled out my canon camera lithium battery which I haven't used in years.

It still holds a lot of charge.

Can laptop batteries sit years unused without the cells dying?

I'm about to purchase a spare laptop battery because 2/4 cells have bulged and died. It can still be used, but only half capacity. I plan to keep the spare in storage and use only as needed.

If half the cells are bulging, I wouldn't recommend continuing using it at all.

Instead, buy two spares and use both in an alternating fashion and letting them discharge to only 40% to 30% or so when you switch to the other battery.

If you want you battery to last really long, keep it at 20 to 80%
