    There are always lots of proposals like this that don't make it, but some do, as the history of cooperative space labs / stations in that video demonstrate.

    There are usually independent projects discussed by each country as well, as that's really what they want - complete control / privacy of their own, but it's just too expensive.

    The closest they can get is to add-on "rooms" of their own connected to a shared resource framework.

    It's amazing how much this stuff all costs. It's funny to imagine the cost of actually building some of those huge fanciful space stations imagined in the 1950's :)

    I'd be all for anything that promises to make it less expensive. Mining asteroids has been proposed as a way to offset costs, though given the location of our largest asteroid concentration, we'd definitely need to be reliably reaching Mars before that happens.
