Anything else I should be aware of with the rx8?
Does the car have any maintenance documentation? Make sure it only gets regular, not synthetic oil. Make sure it has the latest PCM flash from Mazda, and the ignition coils, if replaced within the past forty thousand miles, are the new revised designs. Check the top of them; if there are circular burn marks on the coils, they need to be replaced otherwise you're going to have rough idling issues and a lot of hesitation at high RPM. A good running Renesis should been smooth all through its RPM band; any hesitation while accelerating or the RPM hovering around at idle are signs that either the spark plugs or ignition coils are due for replacement.
If the car is missing the owner's manual, save the spark plug so you can match up new ones at a parts store. I don't remember the specific part numbers for them, but I know they have to be NGK, and you have to get two Leading and two Trailing plugs. Don't mix them up when replacing them, there is a letter T or L near where the plugs go so make sure the label on plugs match up. All four plugs are usually $80 to $100 pending on where you get them from. Replacing the spark plug wires along with the plugs themselves is a good idea.
No 5000+ RPM clutch drop launches. The factory clutch is an organic piece and can't take much abuse.
I would definitely recommend ditching the Focus. I have friends who have Focuses and they're constantly having little issues here and there with different bits of the car. Plus, I think the Focus is kind of a poor car all round, it doesn't look good, and many other cars for the same value do a lot better in practicality and reliability.
If you've been driving a Focus, I wouldn't recommend an RX-8. It would be quite a jump to drive something like that, but the Wankel engine means that for maintenance on the propulsion, you have two options: Mazda, or Specialist, both of which are expensive compared to the options with other cars. Other than that, the RX-8 is a great driver's car, and despite looking great, sleek, and sporty, it's very practical. Tailgunner up there has also listed some common problems with it, such as the fuel consumption. If you are still considering it though, TEST DRIVE ONE before buying.
The Suzuki seems like the most reasonable, smartest buy. It'll be the easiest to take care of, and the nicest to have, and the most versatile(best in all conditions). Suzukis are a bit boring in general compared to something like the RX-8, so it's a matter of how you like cars. The Suzuki will be the worst on holding it's value out of all these cars, so buy this car if your intention is to get the most use out of it.
The Mini's cool, but if you had a Focus, i'm sure you want something a bit more practical.
The Golf GTI is what you'd buy instead of the Mini, because it shares the german-build quality, but with additional practicality, versatility, power, and features. It may be a VW, so it's a bit bland, but GTIs are always fun to drive, and very practical, good cars to have. Out of all these cars it's also the most efficient, fuel-wise and with power. Yes, maintenance may be a bit pricey, but that's the price you pay for a car that'll certainly last and be a joy to have.
I think for you, if you are thinking of buying a new car(which I think is the smartest choice), the Suzuki or the Golf are the best choices.
How about a used Volvo wagon? Some old models are extremely easy to fix and their parts are abundant.
If you're comfortable fixing them yourself, they can be quite enjoyable. One of my co-workers recently handed down his family's old 240 wagon to his brother, and they keep it in tip-top condition.
Out of your first four choices Ayle, I'd lean toward the GTI myself..but that DSG would scare the hell out of me reliability wise...plus the fluid changes aren't cheap. If it had a stick...i'd feel more comfortable....just be sure to test EVERYTHING electrical that you can.
Not counting that, I'd look at the Suzuki. Suzuki plans to keep a small presence here through service points so you'll have places to go for warranty work. Unfortunately, the SX4's sister car...the Fiat Sedici isn't sold here...so in the event that things do turn more sour and those dealers close service points then you're kinda stuck. Also...you'll be forced to essentially drive the car until the wheels fall off due to the diminished resale value.
