I have been contemplating buying a new laptop for a long time now. I was waiting for the newer MBP with sky or kaby lake in it. However my patience is now growing thin since my primary 14inch HP ENVY died on me.

I have another 17inch envy which is too big to carry on.

Let me answer the regular questions

    · What is your budget? Between $1500-1700

    · What size notebook would you prefer? Between 13"-15

    · Where will you buying this notebook? USA

    · Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
    a. Like: Apple (however the wait grows on me )

    b. Dislike: I don't dislike any by need a good-looking sturdy lightweight laptop

    · Would you consider laptops that are refurbished/redistributed? NO

    · What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?

o I would be using it work – Connecting over RDP or Citrix to my office machine

o Will be using it for Photo Editing, After Effects.

    · Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?
40% Desk 60% travel, my job requires me to be on call so I need something with decent battery, excellent wifi and lightweight

    · Will you be playing games on your notebook? If so, please state which games or types of games?
    Lightweight maybe.

    · How many hours of battery life do you need?
    Above 6 hrs

    · Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK?
    Without seeing is OK

    · What OS do you prefer? Windows (Windows 7 / 8), Mac OS, Linux, etc.
Windows or Mac , no pure Linux variants ( fedora etc )

    Build Quality and Design

    · Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
    Yes very important

    · When are you buying this laptop?
Already ordered a DELL XPS 15 –However planning to cancel the order since I have read about a lot of issues. ( I was mesmerized by the build and design so jumped the gun )
    Within 10 days

    · How long do you want this laptop to last?
3-4 years at the very least ( I will not have enough money to buy a new one within that timeframe )

    Notebook Components

    · How much hard drive space do you need? Do you want a SSD drive?
    256 gb ssd minimum

    · Do you need an optical drive?

    No

    Other information

I would like a laptop where at least ram and ssd is replaceable so that I do a minor upgrade after a year or two if needed. This will be a big plus for me.

I selected dell xps because they say that it has w 15inch screen in a 14 inch body.

Details of the xps that I ordered – and will probably cancell

If you liked the XPS15's aesthetics, you should probably get the precision 5510. Same external chasis, better internals.
That said, if you're using it for work along with a lot of traveling, I'd probably get the 7470 for the MIL-STD rating.

EDIT: Also, if you think XPS15s have issues, go read on the non-apple operated apple forums. The number of people having problems with MacBooks is staggering. Apple operated forums censors many posts, and they outright deny most problems that exist but eventually settle the lawsuits that follow.

Macbooks are the number one notebook coming in with issues at my uni, but they aren't the most popular notebook, they just have a lot of issues. That being said it depends what OS you want more than the notebook imo. If you love OS X than you might as well wait. If you like Windows I would never ever recommend switching to OS X.

Thanks for the comments Galm17 - The thing i like about mac is apple-care i would drop my machine at the store make some noise and people will fix. This level of serviceability is not available in DELL. I have seen a lot of channels where people keep complain with customer service. With no proper response.

I will now take a look at precision 5510.

Thanks for the suggestions i appreciate the same.
And BTW was unless it is plain jane unix flavour any OS is fine.

Dell Business Class service for a Precision would be far better than anything an XPS 15 can offer, pretty sure they still offer onsite and will come to you.

Inspiron? Those are built worse though than all the options we've said.

Precision got autocorrected to inpspiron. Thanks for the pointers. Spoke to the dell people and got very friendly with one. On build quality he ordered the series as below.

    Best on the bottom.

    Inspiron
    Vostro
Xps / Alienware ( latter being tad more expensive and better )
    Latitude
    Precision being the best

Thanks for providing the right direction.
