As part of my senior design I am with a group creating a composite (carbon fiber) car rim.

Part of this is doing a survey.

Below are the questions, if you could reply to this thread it would be appreciated.

The last vehicle I replaced the wheels on was a Mazda RX-8.

    1. What is something lacking in current car rims?
Maybe finding the really good designs are on huge rim sizes like 19" or 20". We all don't have SUV's and Lambo's...

    2. Are there any designs that you have avoided for any particular reason?
Chrome, "Bling Bling" type rims - I'm not into that kinda stuff. I seen a Lexus IS with chrome dollar rims and found it ghastly... and this was in the UK too! I also try to avoid wheels that are suited for a particular make, so I don't plan to slap on Mercedes or BMW wheels on my VW as that's plain wrong.

    3. What is the life expectancy of a car rim (and its use)?
Lifetime with the car if well taken care of, and a lot of pothole dodging too.

    4. How often do you change rims? Do you change rims for a season?
I changed my wheels once, but that's only because the car originally had Steel Wheels which didn't look right with my car!

    5. Has weight been a concern in rim selection (if so how much)?
Slightly, obviously the lighter the better but you don't want to reduce the rigidity of the alloy wheels which is important. Safety comes first.

    6. Do you prefer an open or closed rim design?
Open design... thats the one where you can see the brakes inside right? < ---- Dunce

    7. Does the environment affect your choice in car rim?
Kind of, during winter we get road salt which can affect the finish on the wheels. We also tend to get potholes too so it has to look sturdy.

    8. Highest price paid for a car rim?
I paid around £122 per rim, so £488 for the whole set which is my most expensive so far. I went with the OEM look on mine but maybe when I get a sporty car I might go with the full works and get the big brand names like OZ or BBS which means $$$.

    9. Do you carry an identical spare?
No, have one space saver wheel! But I really should do though...

    10. What do you do with the rim when they are damaged?
If kerbed then get it refurbed. If badly buckled then order a replacement alloy if possible, otherwise I have a deep sigh and go order a new set of BBS CH rims for my VW.

    1. What is something lacking in current car rims?
as far as OEM, i feel like alot of auto makers can't seem to present a model with a decent wheel design. i don't really fault them for using heavier (stronger) wheels for their cars because the average joe isn't responsible enough to handle bigger/lighter performance wheels. my BIGGEST gripe about OEM wheels are: HORRIBAD FACTORY OFFSETS. BAD!!!

    2. Are there any designs that you have avoided for any particular reason?
    hmmm...ugly ones? :p

    3. What is the life expectancy of a car rim (and its use)?
hard question to answer because there are way too many variables. i guess i feel like a product should last as long as i can take proper care of it.

    4. How often do you change rims? Do you change rims for a season?
when i see something i like better.

    5. Has weight been a concern in rim selection (if so how much)
yes and no. yes, added unsprung weight is not wanted, but i usually stick to "premium"-type of wheel brands so they are almost always lighter than OEM.

    6. Do you prefer an open or closed rim design?
    it depends on the application.

    7. Does the environment affect your choice in car rim?
i'm from the south so no. summer tires all year round for us folks.

    8. Highest price paid for a car rim?
    $1,500 per wheel without tires.

    9. Do you carry an identical spare?
nope. OEM set(s) are usually my spares.

    10. What do you do with the rim when they are damaged?
i drive with lots, and lots of care because all of my cars (and every single car in the future) were/are modified. i spot potholes like an eagle spots it's prey. :p usually, when my rims get messed up, it's due to someone borrowing my car. although, one time i did have a rear-tire blow out on the highway and it caused one of my rims to crack. i have a pretty renowned shop that handles all of my rim repairs.

    Customer Survey For Warrior Rims

    1. What is something lacking in current car rims?
Not sure, I see no problem with them. Making them lighter sounds good for fuel, though.

    2. Are there any designs that you have avoided for any particular reason?
Three-spoke rims, they look silly. Many-spoked rims (like bicycle rims) because I feel they belong in old luxury cars.

    3. What is the life expectancy of a car rim (and its use)?
Life of the car. Just want it to hold the wheels together.

    4. How often do you change rims? Do you change rims for a season?
I rock the stock alloys on my car, and I don't change them.

    5. Has weight been a concern in rim selection (if so how much)?
Never think about it, but it'd be nice if replacing them with CF rims improves mileage enough to cover the cost in a reasonably short time.

    6. Do you prefer an open or closed rim design?
Open as in you can see the car body behind the wheel? I like that more than closed.

    7. Does the environment affect your choice in car rim?
    Nah

    8. Highest price paid for a car rim?
Whatever the upgrade cost me from the steel wheels to alloys. I forget.

    9. Do you carry an identical spare?
Nope, steel-rimmed and somewhat smaller than the original tires.

    10. What do you do with the rim when they are damaged?
Car garage, let them fix it.
