    Hello again,

This time I'm trying to work out the issue with my red Ranger. It originally came with an M290X (8970M) but that seems to have an issue where it freezes Windows anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 mins after booting.
I threw a 7970M in her and loaded the drivers and it seemed ok until I realised that there was no action from the GPU fan. I installed an old game from the same era as the GPU and the framerates were terrible and the card was cooking.
The fan passes the pre-boot diagnostics and it even spun while I was unsuccessfully trying to install a faulty 880M.
I tried HWinfo64 and adjusting the fans in that only made changes to the CPU fan.
Any ideas? I've never messed with AMD cards before.

    cut the pwm wire=)

I also have m290x cooking few times at 104c (maybe more if that's some sort of measurable limit for hw). It seems to me that either hw info messes with it (although its not controlled through it) or some weird thing when on battery then plugged in again, never got around that. I just keep an eye on hwinfo.

Thanks for the tip. Which wire is that one?

Theres been a lot of talk about it in a few threads, like...
M17xr3/r4/Ranger - Plug and Play High RPM CPU fan mod
Its the blue wire on fans with colored ones, I think the ranger has them all in black though.
You can find out from the pictures
You dont have to cut the wire, just pull the pin out and later you can get it back.
It will spin loud, ALL the time.
Anyhow, seems to me there are other issues with your ranger, I just said that so you can see if the fan works at all.

Thanks man. Yeah someone butchered this thing and I've been trying to get it fully operational but keep hitting issues. Tonight I am going to throw a 780M in it and see what happens.

Check the post about using an external PWM generator. I think that might be best since HWInfo can lock up.

I put the 780M in here and the fan works fine (the card temp still gets up there). There must be something funky with the 7970M or its drivers in the Ranger. I'm going to leave the 780M in it and sell it like it is. When I get a chance I will try the 7970M in my M17x R3 and see how it functions.
