Does raid 0 work well with the Gateway P78xx series? I want to add additional 320 but just need the ok from my NBR pals. I know its supported but the heat factor is what I also ponder.

Yep as soon as you install the new hard drive you can set up a Raid Array (1 or 0) if you so choose. Just boot to your BIOS and follow the manual, its a really simple process

Its going to wipe your drive so you will have to completely reinstall everything/reimage everything, and it will run pretty hot due to both drives being active almost all of the time though.

Raid option of this models are great. If you add a second hdd and raid 0 it. Then you get near 1.5 times faster data read and write speeds and 2 times capacity. This is a great option to have in a laptop. If you have a chance of upgrading to 2 SSD raid 0 then it's gorgeus... I mafe 2 Vertex SSD Raid 0. I'm taking scores like 400+ MB/second reads. That's unbelievable on a lap top...

How hot is pretty hot? Are the idle temps much higher than just a single drive? Under stress do they start to burn? I know with one drive it gets warm around the touch pad.

I cant give you an exact temp (as they dont read temps in RAID) but it will feel warmer than your single drive.

Remember that you will now have 2 drives working almost as much as your single drive, so while each drive might be 1 or 2 degrees cooler you are essentially doubling the heat that is produced in that no airflow drive bay.

Its according to the drives you are using i suppose. I've ran 2 RAID Arrays in my 6860:
2 x 5400RPM 320GB WD Blue (warm but not excessively so unless the drives were working alot and then it would warm up enough to notice, could get a bit unformfortable if i was transfering multi GB files for over an hour)

2 x 7200RPM 320GB WD Black (warm all of the time and could get uncomfortably warm with multitasking)

Neither set up produced enough heat that would fry the drives, i do not think. But it was an annoyance, and while decently fast, it took away from my overall enjoyment of the computer.

I'm using a 128GB SSD and 500GB HDD storage drive now and thats about the best set up i've ran. I get WAY more speed and still have plenty of room for data.

Man those 128Gb SD are still expensive. Think I'm going to stick with just one 320 7200rpm. I like to enjoy my computer overall. Thanks Kamin and SeekthetrutH!

If you need more storage space, you can always install another HDD and just not RAID them. It would just set up as another drive (i use S: to designate storage)

You can buy a cooler and the hdd temps will drop and i'm thinking to mod the hdd bays to have better airflow with cooler.

i have and id but its a bit complicated. :p

I will post it soon maybe next wee with some screens. hope to get a better support this time.

Less heat with them not in raid since the computer wouldn't be accessing them at the same time constantly..hmm good idea.

Id love to see that have yet to mod a lappy just deskys.
