I figured I would create a thread. I've been doing a lot of reading on the Escort Radar detector forum. Got me curious, any other NBR peeps use radar detectors?

Currently I have an Escort Passport 9500i. It's mounted just under the rear view mirror using Escorts Blend Mount. Its attached to the mirror stem with a short pigtail power cord that's plugged into the mirror power plug. Its a nice clean setup.

My main use for the radar detector is long road trips. Obviously living in Northern VA, its illegal to use a radar detector. Through I doubt there are many radar detector detectors in use in VA. Also a fine for the detector is less then that of a speeding fine, and no points are awarded, and the RD isn't confiscated.

Lately I've been thinking of custom mounting a smartcord in the dash, and thinking of various ways to mount the detector to see if there are better ways of keeping it out of sight.

Another thing I've been thinking about is having Escort upgrade my 9500i to a 9500ix for $129. Basically they will upgrade the memory, add in the 9500ix features such as autolearn, load the Defender database into the RD, and put it in a new case. Just trying to research if the price is better than selling the 9500i and buying the 9500ix.

Anyway just curious if anyone else uses a RD. Right now I'm on a road trip and the wife is driving so I'm bored. :p

My family used to use one, though it's collecting dust right now. Don't remember the model since I was a child at the time. Most of the places we travel through have detectors being illegal anyway.

Personally, I don't use one out of laziness. Never had an issue with speeding on the Interstate, and the only time I've ever gotten pulled was because I was being stupid and going fast on a road surrounding the campus.

I had to stop using mine because all the shops along the side of the road use IR security systems and it was always going off.

Yea there are a number of false alerts due to automatic doors around here. That a one reason I'm considering the 9500i to 9500ix update. The auto learn will lock out a signal as a false alert of that freq has been hit 3 times in the same area in a short period. Ira deaog es to make daily routes and commutes quite.

@private, I have an old one that my dad use to use back I the day. This game have come a long way. As far as I know, Virginia is the only state to outlaw radar detectors. Maybe D.C. but that's about it. Sadly that's where I live :p

Though in all honesty, I don't any more. When I was younger I did a lot though

My dad had one way back in the early 90s.

I've never used one. I've never been pulled over for intentionally speeding on the highway though. The townie cops in Mass just guess how fast you were going anyway, and the one time I got tagged on the highway I was going 75 in a 65 which is generally fine.

I just keep my speed low now.

Just figure out where the speed traps are and the rest you can rocket through .

For me, it's just one county near home, and the two major urban areas. But for the rest of the 200+ miles between campus and home, there are no cops, or at least a significant presence.

Most of the Interstate here has a solid barrier between the two directions of traffic; most cops I see are (luckily) on the opposite direction that I am. Made me feel all fuzzy inside when I past a cop doing 90 in a 75 :p

I removed my rear view mirror and reglued it an inch lower so that I could fit my detector right above it and still have use of the sun visors. It was well hidden there. One time someone broke into my car but only stole crap I was on the fence about throwing away anyway and missed the $400 radar detector.

I wouldn't be so sure. When traveling through Virginia, I always had the detector resting on the dash on a beanbag sort of mount, and would switch it off and pull it down when I got near cops.

It helps to know what bands the police in your area use. In my state, it was only Ka, so I switched off X and K band in the detector and never got another false alert since Ka is only used by police radar. K band was used in my state, but only for those stupid speed signs by the side of the road that don't do anything. Also X band from police is extremely rare or non-existent in almost all of the US. It really pays to figure it out.

    I've never seen X used...

K is mostly door openers, but there's 1-2 of them floating around here.
