I tried installing an R9 M290X from an Alienware 18 in my M15x and it did not post, just a black screen with Num and Scroll locks flashing. I put my 460m back in and it is working as normal.

Does this mean the M290x is dead? If so what is the best course of action?

Get your money back, if you cant or had gotten for free you can either sell it or bake it and hope that it works. Wish that modern electronics had better build quality.

I would test the card in a " compatible " laptop before making any assumption. When you buy a card that is not made for that laptop , you are taking a risk.

M290x works fine in M15x except that fans run full speed I think.

In fact right up until pascal/polaris cards all mxm 3.0 cards work. The only issue is heat on a few of them.

The card was confirmed working in the AW 18 R3 alongside its counterpart by the seller, would it be possible that I fried the card by installing it with the backplate too high thus not making contact between the die and the heatsink?
