Hi owners of the Y500 with SLI GT 650M and i7-3630QM.

Is the 170w power adapter required to run both graphics cards? Can I run SLI with the standard 120w adapter or will one of the GPU's be disabled?

If the 120w does work, is there any throttling with the GPU's/CPU? Can the GPU's still be overclocked?

    Thanks a bunch.

You're gonna need the 170W PSU. I think you'll be able to use it with the 120W while enabling SLI, but most likely you will encounter an error while the computer is under a heavy load, telling your power supply isn't adequate and the laptop will power down.

It should work fine, but if you're using the laptop on heavy processing, the battery would not charge or charge very very slowly. It's highly recommended to get the 170 watt power brick, most especially if you plan to overclock the sli gpu speeds.

Looks like the 170w adapter is needed then. Thanks for the info.

Yes, the 170w adapter is needed for best perfomance with SLI on the Y500.

I answered this in my other post that you replied to.

Notebookcheck is a German website and they were able to order the preconfigured SLI option, which comes with the 170W charger by default. Lenovo's US website doesn't offer the SLI model, only models with one GPU and an optical drive and they only come with a 120W adapter. The only way to get SLI is to buy a removable GPU and 170W adapter separately.
