Hello, I have bought the M17x around September, and it's meeting my every expectation. However, for some strange reasons, my M17x frequently has a loud beep on boot-up whenever the laptop is on battery. The beep is so loud that people turn and look at me. The beep happens after the alienhead, and before the options (F1 - resume) and (F2 - setup). Press F1 takes me to the alienware spawn initiation, and then windows. Press F2 takes me to the bios menu.

Is there any way to turn it down a notch (if not off completely)? I have no idea where this sound is coming from, because I mute my computer on shut down. Any help will be great. Thanks.

I think it's a warning/error beep because Hybrid graphics are enabled but can't be used because you're on battery, and so needs you to confirm F1 (onboard 9400M) to Continue or F2 BIOS.

The quickest answer is to ensure you have it plugged in before turning on, or perhaps put it into Hibernate before you power off with just 9400M in use?

If that fails, just disable the additional gfx in the BIOS so it will only use the 9400M and try rebooting on battery to confirm.

    Cheers

unfortunately, the beep sound happen before the F1/F2 options, and I have went into the bios, and there aren't any options to turn the beep sound off. I have also done some readings, and supposedly there is a way to turn off the beep sound from window's device manager, but I can't find it on vista... so this is a no go.

putting the computer to sleep or plug into the power will work just fine as you have pointed out. But there are times when plugs aren't around or when i need to shut down the computer, and the loud beep will come back when boot-up from battery.

its a warning that something has changed in BIOS

You can change it but it would require decompiling the bios then removing the command to beep then recompile it and then flashing

No one can do it but dell since the tools we have are far from safe to use ;)

I have absolutely NO idea how, but my M17x stopped doing this. It doesn't even ask for me to turn off my graphics cards (and I prefer it this way; I'm pretty sure I know when I want my graphics cards on or off)
