I saw that the Precision M6300 comes with this card. I know it is a professional card aimed at designers and all,but just how good is this card in handling the latest games?

Just as good as the 8800M GTS.

Yep,Dreamer is right! But you might want to wait a little, since there is FX 3700 coming out with 1GB of memory!

actually the fx3600 is somewhere between the 8800gts and the gtx.
the shaders' number is like the gts' one, but it is still faster than this card.
whether it is due to a different architecture or driver is not clear.

i have the m6300 with this card:

    Intel Core 2 Duo T8300 @ 2.4GHz
    4 GB RAM 667 MHz
    NVIDIA Quadro FX 3600M 512MB
    175.75 (DELL Stock Driver)
    200 GB HDD (7200 rpm)
    1440x900 Non-Glare Display
    WinXP Professional

and my 3dmark06 score is like that:

    3dmark06 score (@stock): 8874
    3dmark06 score (@600/900): 9730

so it is good. i can play grid at full res & max settings & 4xmsaa smoothly.
same with cod4, gears of war, bioshock, etc.
i play crysis at 1280x800, all high, no aa, relatively fluent most time.
some very high cvars enabled (like sunshafts). could run a little smoother, though.

the fx3700 will surely be better, but i guess not because of the 1gb ram
(which most games don't use anyway when at moderate resolutions).
i think it is more important than the 3700 will have 128 shader units instead
of the 3600's 64, and maybe some slightly different architecture.

If you're getting higher scores, that's because Dell's stock speeds are higher than others. Gaming performance should be similar with the same drivers and clock speeds.

dell's stock speeds are 500/799. that's the same like in the gateway with the 8800gts. still the performance is better. a gateway user who switched to a m6300 confirmend this on a discussion on notebookforums. also there where a lot of people discussing this, but noone could provide a clear answer. fact is: the fx3600 as it comes with the m6300 & with stock 175.75 driver performs slightly better than the 8800gts and worse than the 8800gtx.

yes, you're right, my screen only allows 1280x800 which makes the 3dmark results a little better than with the default resolution.

however, the 3600 is a good card. also for gaming. the 3700 will be better.
but also more expensive in the beginning. you will find it in the new dell and
also in the new lenovo 17" thinkpad. i guess there will be a hp one as well.

the 3700 will have even more shader units than the 9800gtx, btw.

my laptop was around 1470 euro from dell. if you want some beefy laptop
with a 3700 you will probably have to spend ~1000 bucks more.

What are the chances of fitting 3600m into a 8710p? Does anyone have any info on the possible cost of the process?

It's been asked before but no one has done it yet.

Also, HP won't sell you that card and other cards most likely won't work even if they fit. There have been similar unsuccessful attempts with previous HP notebooks.

Btw, next time try asking in a more appropriate section if you want to get any replies.
