The closest we've had to a topic like this is "How paranoid are you?" and that was pretty fun.

I'm curious to see what software/ methods people use to stay safe.

Last virus was 1 or 2 years ago...that was due to a friends flash drive.

Prepare to get flamed to hell. I'd do it myself but I'm lazy.

No windows firewall is just... let me just ask, why?

Experiment. You don't catch a 'cold' from being cold. The same that you won't catch a virus from not having an antivirus. They have to come from browsing malicious sites.

This is not on my critical machine, but on an acer netbook used for browsing NBR, MSN-mail, School mail, Newegg, Amazon, Facebook, Stack Overflow...and that's really it.

As you can see, none of these sites pose a threat, therefore, it's no different than having a firewall, live heretics detection, and the most locked down anti-virus library possible.

Yes, I realize that. I went without an AV for quite a while. But no firewall? It seems silly. You lose nothing by turning the firewall on. System hardening doesn't have to use resources. I can understand not using an AV but having 0 method of protection seems needless.
