Nah, that was the Beamer purchase. :D And I'm well past midlife crisis and well into the I don't give a darn phase. Hawaiian shirts here in SoCal are fairly popular with our weather and being close to the beach and all. They're not a statement whatsoever.

Just went to my boy's graduation ceremony this last week. Now I'm telling him to get a job and get the heck out of my house, dammit!

He will also inherit his parents wealth, just like your son will get to blow away yours (and the missus') o_O

With most of my Tom Ford stuff you only know it's Tom Ford if you look very closely. :) These slides happen to be an exception. In general I'm not after flashy displays of brand names and logos. I do like designer clothing as fashion is something I'm actually interested in. But I brought these slides up in this thread about items you want but probably won't purchase because they're kind of ostentatious. I of course wouldn't even consider buying them at all if I didn't regard the quality as being pretty high.

But no, I'm not claiming to be as financially grounded as you, Fishon. Some day ;) I'm basically a dandy.

Our view of how well off we are depends on how we view the future.
For instance, you believe you will be able to get good cash for your stock portfolio in the future.
Even if you have cash, there is no guarantee (except in very few circumstances), what amount of goods/services you will be able to get in return. One bag of ramen noodles could cost $1000 next year. Cash is backed by nothing.
Similarly the behavior of people is affected by how much they think they will inherit. Admittedly, the time horizon is longer, but the effect is still there.

Doubtful that the economic situation in a developed country would be so messed up as to change the price of ramen that drastically. In the extremely unlikely event that the economy collapses that hard, you have much bigger worries than investments or inheritance.

That was an extreme example, but the principle still holds. It can also be applied to how we feel about job security. The consumer confidence thing.
It can be argued that the odds of ramen being $1000 are the same as Itchy/Fishon Jr not getting oodles of cash via their parents in a few decades.

*looks at his stockpile of ramen*
I think I will survive next economic crisis. At very least I will have something to eat :D.
