Got a new 2.5ghz MBP with the 512mb 8600MGT. Running Leopard. I downloaded a few 1080p quicktime trailers from apple's site. I have my CPU monitor running and playing the trailer at half size. Every few seconds the framerate goes low and skips but then it speeds back up. However my CPU usage doesnt seem to go above 70%. What could be wrong? Audio plays smooth thru the whole clip.

1080p h.264 encoded video is very taxing even on high end desktops. OSXBMC is the only Mac program I know that will consistently handle high bit rate h.264 video.

I'm pretty sure when I first got the notebook and tested 1080p trailers I had no problems. So I'm wondering if it was an osx/driver update that caused this.

It could depend on the file size/length of the movie. If you initially tested with a smaller file, it could have played properly (eg short trailer). But now with a longer trailer, it might not be the same.

Try playing the ones you played initially and see if they play the same speed.

Otherwise try out OSMBX as chris27 said, its pretty good on hd video playback.

XBOX Media Center for OSX. It is very similar to front row (and you can install a skin to make it even more similar looking :p). http://www.osxbmc.com/

Soon it'll be called Plex though.
