PC2-5300 vs PC2-6400

So I am thinking of upgrading my T61P from the 2 gigs it came with to 4gigs since the price has dropped considerably on crucial. Crucial recommends either one of these (5300 or 6400) and are both the same exact price. My dilemma is essentially, which do I buy, considering they are the same price? Do I flip a coin and pick one, or are is one better than the other, and if so can anybody shed light into which one I should buy, and why?

PC2-6400 will downclock to PC2-5300 when installed in your system. So, they are the same thing.

And PC2-6400 will give you some room for overclocking as well.
Apart from that, there is no other advantage.

 

Thanks, so you suggest PC2-6400? The fact that it has to downclock does not entail a lose of performance does it?

 

Yeah, go for PC2-6400. Since Crucial lists it as compatible with your notebook, the BIOS won't have no problems recognising it.

No performance loss/gain.

 

Yeah - and say, for instance that your T61p gets fried somehow, like with a Starbucks double-latte - then you can move your PC2-6400 into your new laptop, and use it at full speed....
