Its a reason why they have literally dumped out GP100, GP102 and GP104 at almost the same time.
Why mobile users now get the FULL GP104 from the get go and not a disabled one which Nvidia plan to top with a full GP104 in 2017 which is the strategy they have used for every single year before. But suddenly they ditched it. The very strategy that led them to a GPU marketshare dominance and record breaking profits.

    Pascal is Maxwell 2.0.
Its Maxwell but with really high clocks because its built on a 16nm node that supports it. That and more cores due to smaller transistor size is what Pascal is all about.

Volta is the real new architecture after Maxwell. And Nvidia is eager to get it out as soon as possible because stacked VRAM aka HBM2 will be plentyful and ready for Nvidia in 2017.
So this is why we see the agressive release of Pascal cards now. There is actually no reason for them to even do this since AMD is absolutely nowhere to compete with high end. Yet Nvidia go allin...

The signs are all here. Expect a Volta card, if not several, in H2 2017 sometime

Even if AMD is not releasing new cards Nvidia has to release some new ones to restart a new wave of purchase in gaming laptop.

Absolutely true but not fully enabled GP104 chips.
That goes against everything they have done in the past

    So in FS Extreme :
    notebook 1070 - 7855 (Fury X level)
    desktop 1070 - 8327 (+6%)
    notebook 1060 - 5433 (between 970 and 980)
    desktop 1060 - 6062 (+11,5%)

Notebook cards are still behind, but gap is unprecedentedly minimal.
