    Bruh. Mobile Barts/GF114 to Pitcairn/GK104 was +80%. GF110 to GK104 was +50%. GF110 to GK110 was over +100%.

    What would be nice is a card that performs between desktop 980 to 980ti levels and sits in the same position as the 970M on mxm...

    ....with sub 100W power consumption and sub $500 prices :D

    A nice final upgrade for my old but trusty Alienware!

    Considering 980ti performs roughly 60% faster than the 980M not an impossible feat

    GTX 580M GF114:
    330mm2 100W

    Now however:

    GTX 980 (mobile) GM204

    As you can see:
    Previous flagships had around 300mm2 die area. If Nvidia goes down to 300mm2 again for the upcoming Pascal chip, they will lose a lot of performance potential compared to if it was 398mm2 Maxwell vs 398mm2 Pascal. Meaning they lose 70-100mm2 die area where they could have fitted a lot of transistors.

    Then its the power problem. Previously the cards have always had around 100W TGP/TDP limit. The Maxwell chip today is 165W. If Nvidia goes down to 100W for the mobile Pascal chip which is probably desired since more OEMs can build notebooks for it, it wil lose performance potential again. That extra 65W for the Maxwell card is eating in to the Pascal advantage.


    It all brew down to what Nvidia will do for the mobile Pascal GPU. 30-50% performance increase over GTX 980, certainly. But if they cut down on power and die size, it will be hard to reach higher performance.

    I like the way you've thought about the die area and the power limits of the different cards, and it makes sense. Although, I wouldn't compare Pascal mobile cards against the GTX 980 (desktop card in laptop), because I see that as more of a curiosity or experiment, but I would compare Pascal against 980M. If you thought we might see 30-50% performance increase over that 980 (desktop card in laptop), then that would make Pascal mobile twice as fast as 980M because: 1.35x1.5 = 2.0 (because 980 is already about 35% faster than 980M)

    Compared to GTX 980M it will be a good deal faster for sure Robbo.
    But we have regular sized MXM GTX 980s too for laptops with lower TDP, so it would be natural to compare against those I think if you think of 165W big sized GTX 980s as experiment and unfair to compare against.

    Yeah, I guess we could compare against the lower TDP 980, as long as it was in the 100 - 125W category, but not sure if it is.

    I doubt they'd cut down the size. It's unnecessary.

    300mm2: ~80 chips per wafer
    400mm2: ~56 chips per wafer

    Thats how they make money
