I have a P870DM-G and I was considering swapping the 1080p display for a 4K Display after I upgrade to 1070 SLI (or maybe a 2000 Series Card when released...) Does the panel have to be specific is my question for example I can't find a 1440p 120Hz option but if I put a 17" panel in there plugged it into would it display an image same with a 4K screen if I bought a screen that was not the stock AUO B173ZAN0 would it still display an image?

    Aliexpress, eBay, taobao, etc

    4K is B173ZAN01.x
    1440p 120Hz is B173QTN01.x

You will need upgraded EDP cable as well

If you get B173ZAN01.0 or B173QTN01.0 you will retain Gsync

But any 17.3 should technically work right I could care less about gsync since my 980Ms can't use it anyway

Both panels I mentioned are factory options for P870, that is as close as you can get to guaranteed compatibility. Otherwise, the potential issues abound; GPU, system and panel firmware all have to be able to communicate successfully. The panel also has to have the connector on its rear side in the same spot or the cable might not reach. The dimensions or screwholes may even be different requiring modding to fit.

The panels still represent the upper limits of high DPI and high refresh @ 1440p respectively; they can both still be found for us$100-150 covered by aliexpress/ebay return policies. I don't get why you would want to choose something else?

With panels you have to worry about size, mounting and electrical connection type/position.
