I play BF3 on ultra with frames in the 40s, Batman Arkham Origins struggles at high settings (DX11) on Full HD. Starcraft II plays fine at full HD and high settings. This is not for high end gaming but it will play modern titles if you back down the quality a bit. I personally don't mind medium settings on games. Some people want to play at the max, which this laptop cannot handle for the newest games.

Yes the 760M is a nice chip, but does not have the brute force of the higher end models, you should be ok if you disable the usual suspects when it comes to performance hits and go to medium/high details.

There are machines which do have more grunt for roughly same price. So ASUS has really skipped on a better GPU in this system,

Every machine in the $1000 range is going to be a tough balance of build quality, specs and screen quality.

Here in norway we have few other options in the same price range:

Clevo/MSI: worse build quality and WAY louder (main drawback of clevo/msi). Clevo also has poor speakers and no backlit keyboard. And not to mention they look like plastic fantatstic gamer machines, the asus has more classy look. But they do come with GTX765M which is slightly faster.

If this doesn't bother you, go for MSI/clevo, more performance for the money.

There are no other alternatives with GTX GPU in same price range.

As for temps; it's fairly good for the components inside, furmark + prime95 and it stops around 81C GPU and 93-94C CPU, only minor CPU throttling (2.1-2.4GHz throttle). No 800MHz throttle like in the N550JV. Not bad considering it only has one fan - that is not very noisy either.

What about surface temperatures during testing (especially left part)? I assume that with temps around 81C GPU and 93C CPU it has to be pretty hot.

Yeah, its always the case of choosing the best components for your budget.

    Clevo all the way!

If someone wants their laptop to light up like a Christmas tree everytime they push the power button then those people need their heads examined to be quite honest.

I would put my money forward toward more powerful components way before I'd even think about paying for some extra fancy lights on my laptop lol

No problems at all. You can feel the heat, but nowhere near uncomfortable.

Hottest point after 15 mins of prime+ furmark measured to 41C, and that is the outer left edge outside the CAPS lock. That is pretty damn good if you ask me, about every other computer I've owned with dedicated GPU has passed 50C+ somewhere on keyboard during prime + furmark torture test. Bottom is about the same as well. Still I'd not use it on my lap during gaming since it would block airflow.

Your model must be slightly different because mine has two fans. I can hear one running on the right side continuously and one kicks in on the left side from time to time. I believe the left side is actually a GPU fan though. I agree that temps are fantastic. The bottom just gets a bit warm even while gaming. Very impressive for the hardware it has.

hmmm for me it's hard to believe that ASUS has changed so much inside and you have two fans without additional vent holes.

    Thank you for these informations.
How long is the battery on this laptop, I wonder if the battery lasts longer than the N550JV.

I guess the battery time should be about the same. Not tested it myself yet.

N550JV has 59Whr battery, but slightly more power hungry screen (IPS), N56JR has 56WHr battery but regular TN screen. The N550JV might have slightly better battery time, but not by much.

I haven't run the battery down all the way yet but I've had it on browsing the web and YouTube for over two hours. It has 48% left. It's not the greatest battery life. Screen was about half brightness and I was using integrated graphics only. Everyone has different usage habits so it's hard to tell if the life will be enough for you.

Thank you for your reply. So there is no significant difference between the two laptops on the autonomy.

Just received mine today. Great pc so far! Feels very solid and runs quite cold, which for me is one of the most important aspects. Subwoofer and sound quality are also great for a notebook!

I've installed Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and did a minor overclock (5%) and some undervolting (-80mV). Running quite stable without any crashes so far. Under load it went up to 89C on 3dMark Vantage(score 13806 if you're interested), and 81C while rendering with VRay. Idles at 48C. The bottom also stays cool.

For those interested in gaming, I only play League of Legends and it runs super smooth, with fps ranging from 85-145 depending on how much action is going on. The temperature on the keyboard remains comfortable for me, colder than my old gateway P-173.

Only things I dislike so far are the front USB ports(plugged stuff bug me with the mouse because of my small desk), and the strange LAN port that's a bit hard to remove the cable (gotta practice some more hehe).

That's my first post on a tech forum, just wanted to share my experience as those forums always helped me so much. Hope it can help somebody :)

Thanks a lot for your review. Did you notice the sporadic fan behavior that some other users have mentioned? Does the fan spin up for short periods? Is it distracting or annoying?

It does get a bit loud above 75-ish. Nothing that really disturbs me as i'm usually playing music, and my last computer had a quite loud fan. I didn't really pay attention on short spins, maybe it's not loud enough for me to hear. I'll keep an eye on it and report later.

Hello there, question for N56JR owners or ones who have experience about this model. I'm really worried about cooling system. This laptop have great specs, GPU and CPU. I7 4th generation so far I know it can get warmer than I7 3rd generation + this nice GPU it can throttle very easy under full load as I guess. Owners of N56JR's can you download prime95 + furmark and run both of them at the same time to test how this laptop can handle maximum performance and if it will throttle?

Hi Guys! I'm from Poland and sorry for my English. I just bought my brand new N56JR-S4013H... and i have one (for me, it's really problem) question about speakers... i try to update bios, drivers, with and without sub, change the settings in maxxaudio & windows and nothing... when i play (no matter that are music, youtube, movie, game etc.) in some songs, in the same time i hear specific thing... my speakers give me the sound like chassis vibration or something like that. Can You test in yours machine? I upload three of songs where i have this problem (in background). The volume of "vibration" are bit low with lower volume but is still exist and disturb. Can you check it also on Asus Screensaver (it's with audio) because i have the same "vibration". I'm was on the store where i buy notebook and on the second N56JR it's the same.

Maybe this is normal but i'm worried about this. On output jack (external speakers or headphones) it isn't exist.
