    Will they not overheat without additional cooling?

    We don't know yet. However even if you go for the 980M SLI setup, you will still have a powerful system. The 980M will work fine and run cool.

    If they don't require totally redesigned heat sinks and an external power source like the 200W GTX 980 does, then they may work. If they need either or both of those things, I think we can forget about a "desktop GPU" in the Panther.

    There is also the question of the next generation cards and what they will be like form factor and compatibility wise.

    They only have one new chip for the time being and it is MXM...the "NEW" GTX965M > 1427/1667

    THX @ NVIDIA for once again giving two chips the same name...

    Ha ha ha, NO! Those are just the regular and g-sync hardware IDs for the "new" N16E-GR card. ;)
