I have a 60Hz monitor on my GT80 Titan...I wonder if its safe to overclock it? Does it have a long term effect on the monitor?

So I OC'ed using Nvidia Control Panel custom resolution to 96Hz...everything seems buttery smooth now.

It's better to use CRU. If you do it with Nvidia, you can't use DSR at the same time, and the higher refresh rate isn't usable in games that read straight from the EDID and don't allow you to select refresh rate within them.
