Remember, if you already have Avira 9, you can do a Product Update.

Open main window -> Update -> Start Product Update

Here are the instructions on how to disable the Avira AntiVir 9 Personal popup and on how to disable the small update screen.

    Vista Home Premium

    1. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\avnotify.exe
    2. Right-click avnotify; Go to Properties - Security - Advanced
    3. Look under the Permissions folder for System.
    4. Edit - Traverse Folder / Execute File - Deny - Click OK

    Vista Business/Ultimate/Enterprise & XP Professional

    1. Open Local Security Policy through Start > type secpol.msc in Search box and hit Enter
    2. Click on Software Restriction Policies > Action > create New Software Restriction Policies.
    3. On left pane right-click on Software Restriction Policies > Additional Rules > New Path Rule….
    4. Click Browse and navigate to C:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\ and select avnotify.exe and then click on OK.
    5. Set Security level to Disallowed.
    6. Click Apply and then click OK.

    XP Home

    1. Boot into Safe Mode (Press F8 after boot)
    2. Login under the Administrator account
    3. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\avnotify.exe
    4. Right-click avnotify; Go to Properties - Security - Advanced
    5. Look under the Permissions folder for a listing of all the system users. Do the following for all the users:
    6. Edit - Traverse Folder / Execute File - Deny - Click OK
    7. Reboot (into Normal mode) when finished.

    To prevent the minimized update screen from ever showing up;

    1. Start AntiVir. Go to Administration; Scheduler.
    2. Right-click on Daily Update; choose Edit job
    3. Click Next until you reach the Display Mode screen
    4. Select Invisible from the drop-down list.

    Cheers.

but choices are maximized, minimized or invisible, I can no longer choose the reduced window, that would so nicely set itself on the top right corner...

Why not just use invisible, why must you see it update? Invisible is my personal preference.
