I've narrowed my selection down to two laptops:

    Used Laptop - HP Spectre x360 13-ap0038nr
The link is for the same model as the one that I'm buying; the CPU is different:
    • i7-7500U CPU
    • 16GB RAM
    • 512 GB SSD
    • $540 shipped
    • 2.9 lb
    • 13"
    • No warranty - used for approx. 2 years "lightly" with no physical damage
    New Laptop - HP Envy x360 - 15-cp0053cl
    • Ryzen 5 2500U
    • 8GB RAM
    • 256GB SSD
    • $600 shipped
    • 4.5 lb
    • 15.6" screen
    • 4 years of warranty
Which laptop is better for me (I've left the form below if it helps)? Is the price difference justified considering the warranty? I don't think I need the extra SSD space and I'm not really sure of the RAM. Would the extra weight/size be noticed much in a backpack most of the day? Would the same apply if the second one (the Envy) was $860 shipped?

    General Questions

    1) What is your budget?
    $550 give or take $100

    2) What size notebook would you prefer?
    a. Ultraportable; 10" - 12" screen
    c. Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen
    d. Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen
    e. Desktop Replacement; 17"+ screen

Either (a) or (c) above, would prefer something in (c).
    3) Which country will you buying this notebook?

    4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
    a. Like: Don't really care personally
    b. Dislike: Huawei (national security concerns)
    5) Would you consider laptops that are refurbished/redistributed?

    6) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?
Iwill be programming fairly intensive programs. However I have access to a more powerful computer that I could just run things remotely on.

    7) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?
    To and from school.

    8) Will you be playing games on your notebook? (If so, please state which games or types of games?)
Games that will be played won't be taxing at all (solitaire, etc.).

    9) How many hours of battery life do you need?
The more the better. 8+ hours would be ideal.

    10) Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK?
As long as it's light, and small, and doesn't look horrible online, it's okay.

    11) What OS do you prefer? Windows, Mac OS, Linux, Chrome OS, etc.
Linux - I'll be erasing the Windows install and replacing it myself.

    Screen Specifics

    12) What screen resolution(s) would you prefer? (See further below for explanations.)
Doesn't matter as long as it's better than 1920x1080.

    13) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen? (See further below for explanations.)
    Doesn't matter.

    Build Quality and Design

    14) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
As long as it truly isn't ugly, no.

    Notebook Components

    15) How much hard drive space do you need?
    250GB of SSD or more.

    Timing, Warranty and Longevity

    16) When are you buying this laptop?

    17) How long do you expect to use this laptop?
Until it dies (truly... at least 5+ years)

    18) How long could you afford to do without your laptop if it were to fail?
Honestly not much; I would just have to go to Costco or wherever and buy one just to "rescue" myself until I can either fix it or get a more permanent replacement

    19) Would you be willing to pay significantly extra for on-site warranty, or would it be acceptable to you to have to ship the laptop to the vendor for repair with perhaps a week or more outage?
    Shipping is acceptable.
