OK now that thats out the way lets get down to the nitty grtty
My dad wants needs a laptop for work. He doesn't want to spend much money. It would seem that he would prefer to buy from a local shop but I could convinve him to buy online if a better deal is presented.
right now AMD seems to be the only option in his price range.

with that being said I have some questions.

besides running hotter and less battery life and perhaps multitask peformance if you push it to the limit, and the fact that its AMD, is there any reason not to get an AMD equipped laptop?
If AMD is ok to get which is better Athlon or Turion? is there a huge difference? for what I/he wants(see FAQ above) is there a reason to get one over the other?

Also, he is looking at an HP and Toshiba at Office Depot
    the specs are as follows:

    HP PAVILION DV9620 US
    17" WXGA+BrightView
    AMD Turion 64 x2 TL-58 1.9GHz 1MB L2 cache 1600MHz FSB
    2.0GB DDR2 RAM
    2X120GB SATA HDDs
    WinVista Home Premium
    LightScribe SuperMulti DVD
    802.11 b/g wireless
    4 USB2.0 1 FireWire 1 S-video
    5-in-1 reader

    Toshiba Satelite P205D-s7454
    17" WXGA+TruBrite
    AMD Turion 64 x2 TL-58 1.9GHz 1MB L2 cache 800MHz FSB
    2.0GB PC2-5300 DDR2 RAM
    160GB 5400rpm SATA HDD
    WinVista Home Premium
    LabelFlash SuperMulti DVD
    802.11 b/g wireless
    6 USB2.0 1 FireWire 1 S-Video
    5-in-1 reader

He's leaning towards the HP and if nothing comes up as a better deal he's probably going to get it by Sat Dec 8.
Im basically trying to see if this is a decent laptop before he buys it so that he doesn't spend ~500-900USD on a paperweight.

Thanks in advance, I look forward to reading your post

I was thinking about that but it's a tad expensive if you get anthing besids the absolute base model.
He really wants to spend less than 800USD or at most 850.
money is extremely tight right now.
Also, what about the AMD CPUs are they a bad omin or is Intel just the prefered option?

The AMD's are more that enough for that. I do that with a 1GHz Core 2 Duo. So you're golden.

but what I really want to know is; is it OK to get AMD?
everyone seems to be bashing them lately?
I've trusted them in the past, I just want to know if it would be a mistake to trust them now.

Are you using the 30% coupon for the HP? That can help you bump up to the Intel.

no, I was unaware of the coupon.
do I have to buy through the HP site to use it?
or could I go to OfficeDepot and use it as well?
    where is this coupon?

The reason people are bashing AMD is that they have slower, more powerhungry and hotter chips than Intel. And they act like their stuff is as good as intels. But it's more than enough for most usages. Especially then higher clocked ones. But if the intel is about the same price, go for that.
