Now I realize I can just get the exact replacement (for $200) but I was wondering if anyone knew of a motherboard with better specs that I could install instead?

Based on a quick look at the HP service manual and the large number of AMD or Intel based motherboards available for the DV7 series, it’s at least “possible” another MB might work. That said, you have to really do your homework to insure the board will fit with all its external communications provisions (i.e. USB, HDMI, VGA, Card Reader, ect.). Provided those all match your unit’s base slots…then the next step is to confirm display types and connectors, touch pad, power… and all the rest. Just guessing of course, but since many of the parts are common between different DV7 models, there is at least some likelihood that you could do a Intel quad-core…. if that were your goal. It just depends on how much research you want to do and how persistent you are. Go through the boards available on pages 26-28 of the DV7 service manual available at HP or here at NBR. Pick out your upgrade target and then start comparing motherboard configurations with actual photos on ebay… or anywhere else available. If you have your unit apart you can also compare unit bases.

As I said...lots of research! Best of luck, Dave
