Well, it makes sense from their perspective as they entice you to upgrade the whole laptop rather than just the GPU. Plus, if the GPU dies, the MXM allows them to replace just the GPU and not the whole mobo, so win-win for them.

But, from a consumer's perspective, the MXM is pointless as not only you can't upgrade the GPU with e.g. a gaming card, but you can't even upgrade it with a newer generation GPU FROM Lenovo. You can just upgrade the GPU with a current generation one from Lenovo (which cost a pretty penny).

Given the useless MXM slot, for a consumer it would make more sense if they soldered the CPU and GPU on the mainboard and made the whole thing thinner and lighter then.

They could have their perspective and I have my wallet

If I buy/pay for a really expensive workstation with a MXM upgradable GPU, I pretend a MXM upgradable GPU. It shoud be upgradable for at least one generation mXXXm -----> PXXX, better two generations IMO

Yes, of course, I'm not countering that.

I also have a 980M running on my M6700 and might upgrade to a P5000M if I ever find a good deal on it. Perhaps P4000M might be a cheaper alternative if it overclocks well enough to reach 1070 performance.
